Back in the day, I used ProTERM 3.0 and a SupraFAXModem V.32bis all the time
to dial out to BBSes.  There's a driver for that specific modem, and as long
as you have the right cable, it should work with no problems.

More than likely, what you have is a cable problem.  A Mac-to-modem cable
will probably work, but the surest way to go would be to build a cable from
the diagram in the ProTERM manual.  That's what I did...the computer end is
kinda ugly, but it works.
