Thanks to you both for your helpful replies! In the end, I got it to work 
by ditching the null-modem cable as suggested - note that a converter 
from the ImageWriter cable's male DB25 plug to the PC's male DB9 serial 
port is needed.
I ended up using the Windows 3.1 Terminal app on the PC side. I also 
found setting the flow control is a key factor: neither RCS/CTS nor 
Xon/Xoff should be enabled, only hardware.

Anyway, am now in seventh heaven being able to copy across all my old 
Apple II disks.... :)
