If you are running a ROM 0 or a ROM 1 machine, there is a lithium
battery soldered to the motherboard under the power supply to the left
of the power connector on the motherboard.  If you have a ROM 3 then
the is a battery holder in the same location.  The ROM 3 is easy
enough to replace, just pop out the old one, get a replacement and pop
in the new one.  ROM 0 and 1 machines take a little more work but can
be done without having to do any soldering.

You can get a bootable disk with a communications program on it for $2

There are a couple different FAQs that could help you as well but I
don't have any URLs handy.  You can also get help either here on this
newsgroup or in the A2 or A2Pro forums on Delphi (which have free web
based accounts) or on A2Central.com (pay service which only has text
access at the moment).

To get you started, here are a few commands:

CAT gives you a 40 column directory listing (only works in ProDOS)
PR#3 puts the computer into 80 column mode
CATALOG gives you an 80 column directory listing in ProDOS or a
    standard directory listing in DOS 3.3
RUN lets you run a BASIC program
BRUN lets you run a binary program
EXEC lets you execute a text file
- (that is a minus sign) is the smart run command which lets you run
     pretty much any kind of program in ProDOS
BYE is a ProDOS only command that will either ask you for a directory
     and file name or take you to a little program launching program
