Did you check the speed of the RAM?  There are also issues with how to set the
jumpers correctly.  Also even if both of the previous items are correct if you
did not take precautions to protect against static electricity the RAM chips
could have been damaged in the transfer process.  I am not sure what speed the
RAM chips need to be, but I am sure someone on the this newsgroup can fill in.
I can tell you what the speed is on my chips that I transfered from an XT
compatible:  The chips originally on the board (the first bank) are 150ns (full
number: 4256-15NLA), the chips I added may have come from an XT or an AT I do
not remember are 80ns (full number: P21256-08).  The jumpers are both on (in
place).  I cannot imagine that the RAM chips you used would not work unless the
jumpers are set wrong or they were damaged in the transfer process.  In order
to prevent static damage you need to make sure you touch metal connected to the
ground of the board before you extract or place chips in that board.  Also it
is real easy to bend pins under or miss holes.  This would cause flaky
operation at best.  There is nothing magical about using certain types of chips
on these boards.  Apple used standard chips that lots of other computer
manufacturers used.
