     As Penman notes, "scootch" is a technical term; e.g:

If you scootch up a socketed IC just a smidgen and press it back down, the
grundge on the pins will generally be penetrated by socket sprongers and good
contact reestablished.

     Once your IIgs is working correctly, you can schmootch it if you like.
