IIe disk backup problem

I've recently bought an Apple IIe with two 5.25" disk drives from a
garage sale. It all works fine, but some of the disks are in poor
condition and I'd like to back them up to younger disks before they
fall apart.

The disks I want to dupe already contain - how can I put this -
"backups" of commercial software (mostly games), accessed by a custom
multiload menu system - a pretty simple BASIC program that autoruns
when you fire up the computer, and BRUNs each game when you press the
appropriate menu key.

Thing is, when trying to dupe these disks, even using the backup
utilities supplied with the computer (Locksmith 5.1, Crazy Copy), the
dupes don't work - they don't even get as far as autobooting the menu
system. Instead, the drive makes that mechanical graunching noise it
does when you've inserted a disk of the wrong format.

The backup utilities don't report any problems during the duping
process - they write and verify OK. Can anyone suggest any solutions?
Yes, I know that I shouldn't be trying to extend the life of what are
cracked copies of commercial software, but I want to play these games
and I can't buy them in the stores...
