I previously posted the following:
"I have two factory copies of Quark Catalyst. Neither will boot in my
IIe/LC
machine, and both have the same bad blocks identified, namely, $0008-$0017."
Initially, I had no idea why this might happen. However, I was struck by
the following entry in Phil Beesley's nice IIe Card FAQ
http://www.mandrake.demon.co.uk/Apple/lc_card_faq.html
"Note that some copy protected software will not work from the built-in
drive and may require a genuine UniDisk 3.5" drive."
It struck me that the Catalyst manual only specifies using the 3.5" version
with a UniDisk, and that with a IIc+ and a IIe card (using the LC internal
drive), I don't have a real 3.5" UniDisk.
A little research on the TIL revealed the following (
http://til.info.apple.com/tilarchive.nsf/artnum/n8807 ):
"Some copy-protected applications require a UniDisk 3.5-inch as part
of the configuration, or they won't work correctly. Nor do they work
on the SuperDrive inside the Macintosh LC."
and http://til.info.apple.com/tilarchive.nsf/artnum/n2114
"Catalyst 3.0 on a 3.5 inch disk is not compatible with
the Apple 3.5 disk drive. Quark does not currently have
a fix for this problem"
Conclusion: The 3.5" diskette version of Quark Catalyst is a copy protected
program that requires a UniDisk to boot, and will thus not boot from the
internal drives on a IIc+, Mac LC or Apple 3.5 drive.
