It should not need any software. The Apple disk is controlled by 4 wires each connected to one phase of a stepping motor. It takes 2 phase changes to step one track. (One phase change steps half a track used in some protection schemes). So the box must monitor the 4 wires and count the pulses. That's all there is to it. Trivial to make these days with a single chip.
