What the heck is a logarithmic pot?  All that I have seen are linear, or close
to linear.

Also, why are you grounding one side of the pot?  This will probably just give
you signal loss.

Try using a cheapo 1K pot from Radio Shaft and wire two leads together toward
one end.  Then
hook it in series with the signal side of the speaker.  The wiring of the two
leads effectively cuts
the POT in half.  All in all you will probably have to turn down the pot
because the resistance will
be too high toward one end.  The other option to this is to build a circuit
using a LM386  Op Amp
(also at Radio Shaft) to boost the signal and give better volume control.  I
would recommend
picking up the Radio Shaft book on op amps.  One more option is wire a cap to
signal wire
and wire the other end to an audio jack.  You will also need to wire ground to
the jack as well.
This will let you hook up external speakers, especially amplified, to your
Apple.  This might
end up being the easiest route for the greatest flexibility.  Anyone ever
thought of recording
Apple game music?
