That is true if you don't want to use a different disk image format to
support the new features. However, emulators would have to be
rewritten to take advantage of any information in the filename of a
disk image so why not just update them so they support a newer, more
flexible disk image format.
Look at the 2IMG format, it has a header and the disk image data and
it works just fine on emulators that support that format. The 2IMG
format will even support NIB type images and has some user defined
areas which can be used to support even more stuff.
Personally, I think all the people talking about a new disk image
format should take a look at the 2IMG format first and see if it won't
handle what they are trying to do.
