Programming a GS/OS app, and Scanning

I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of some tools
available to program a GS/OS application. Especially if the language
used is C, but any at all would be welcome information.

ALSO, I recently have come across an old Apple Scanner (the 1-bit
variety) and was hoping to find some scanner software. I know there is
a driver with GS/OS 6, but I've heard there was never a complete
scanning application. Then again, I've seen on an old II Alive tape
that someone had used a scanned picture of themselves as an icon in the
Finder, so I don't know if things have changed or not.
