It'll work fine without a battery. However all control panel settings will
go back to their default settings and the clock will need resetting every
time you turn the power back on.

Any Apple dealer will have them as a large number of Macs use the same
battery. The Maxell # is ER3S but it's a fairly common battery that
everyone makes. I'd suggest just poping out the battery and taking it
down to the store.

Very easy. Remove the power supply, then the cover off the battery and
just pull it out.
