Tell that to my IIe's then (one of them 'enhanced'), which strangely
lack 80-column support in any shape or form.

Sorry, but IIe's did not have 80-cols built-in. This was on a separate
card which was not standard to IIe's (although
it might have been included with a *lot* of them). The IIc did have
80-cols built-in.
