Yes, and since he has a IIe card in a Mac, he has an alternate 3.5" drive.
The IIe card can use the internal drive in the Mac, so he could try
connecting his 5.25" drive to the card, and copy files from the internal
3.5".  If that works, it pretty well isolates the problem to his external
3.5" drive. Those are pretty easy to find, and inexpensive:

At Goodwill, etc, if they happen to have them, they're usually just a couple
of bucks.
