Yes, anything will do as a password, but it's considered common
courtesy towards the maintainer of the ftp site to tell who you are
by giving your email address as password.  Some sites does some
rudimentary checks on the supplied password, and rejects it if it
cannot be a valid email address (e.g. if it lacks a "@" character).
 
Also: instead of logging in as "anonymous", you can also usually log
in as "ftp", which means a little less typing.  Thus the url to that
ftp site can also be:
 
    ftp://ftp@apple2softwareis.toocool.com/
