   The 3rd version you speak of was made by Logitec.  Yes, I agree, it sucked. 
I have a collection of mice, and have every model and version made from the
Lisa mouse to the hockey puck USB one.  True, I don't have the hockey puck ones
in all the flavors....

  Try and get one with the gray ball.  It's is nothing more than a rubber
coated ball of lead.
