I found the problem. One of the pins was loose in it's socket, so when I
plug it in, the pin would push back into the cable, rather than into the 25
pin female SS card cable.

I just love wasting time on something like this, when I could be doing
something else more interesting -like figuring out how to use this weird
prototype Strawberry Board. All the tech manuals are in Japanese, except for
the actual programs typed out in the various user manuals.
