I don't know about fires but I do know of a case where there was
considerable
charring and damage to the IIgs. In that case the IIgs was turned off.
I'm guessing
that it's likely safe if the power supply and battery aren't connected and
it's just
used for memory expansion. However that's just a guess. I have 4 of them
but a
fast hard drive tends to make the ROMdisk feature less appealing nowadays
