I grew up on Apple II BBS's... I ran one of the earlier Networks II
software based BBS's (Pearl City Networks) from 1982 through 1985. In
the later part of its history, I interfaced ASCII Express Pro to
Networks II to perform binary file transfers (remember those
Integer/Applesoft ASCII downloads via your Micromodem II???).

One of my friends ran a multi-line chat system starting in the mid-80's
and ran until about three years ago. He ran it off of two Apple
II+'s... One Apple II+ was a modem pool, containing five Micromodem IIe
cards, and the other had the floppy drives. And he interfaced the two
via the game I/O port. Even today I'm amazed at that!

I miss the BBS days!
