In the GS, there are problems with power supply to some slots.
As you have found out, slot 7 may have problems, especially if
power hungry cards are in slots before it. Originally, the II
was not designed for internal hardware other than the i/o cards
(for any hardware type) and the aux slot card. It is possible
to fix this problem if you feel inclined to, but the method you
used works just as well for the GS. For a IIe system, slot
seven is recommended so the system will boot from it. Back in
the day, the Vulcan HD (I think) came out with an enhanced
power supply to get around this problem. Even though the drives
used in the Focus are from portables, they still require a good
amount of power, especially when they start up.
