Yes, that idea was good and would have been better had the CD
manufacturers put the CDs in caddies instead of people having the buy
them themselves.

Yes but you don't always have to make things backwards compatible.
Especially if you are making it backwards compatible with a bad idea.

The DVD manufacturers could have gone with a cartridge system and made
people get caddies for their CDs if they wanted to use them in that
player.
