ProTerm is one of the few exceptions.  Its IIgs serial port driver
communicates directly with the Z8530 SCC chip, and doesn't require the
slot (1 or 2) to be set to Printer/Modem port.

I'm not certain, but Spectrum might be another example.

Most other communications software uses the serial firmware, so they
require the slot to be set to Modem Port (or Printer Port), not Your
Card.

In the case of accessing a printer, even these programs probably need
the slot set to Printer Port (or as appropriate if you are using an
AppleTalk printer).  It is usually only the modem driver that bypasses
the firmware and accesses the serial hardware directly.
