     The "electronics burning" business sounds kind of bad; but, it could make
it easier to track down a failed component-- e.g. a burned chip or fried
resistor.

     The usual suspects for Slot-related problems are the Slot interface IC's
which handle signals like I/O Select. You might check (or just replace) the
74LS138's at H-12 and H-2 as well as the ROM Select IC (another 74LS138) at
F-12.

     There are lots of other possibilities. One positive factor is that when a
logic chip craters it can act as a momentary protection for others and limit
the damage.

     Well, since some people are bragging about gettin //e's for 75 cents and
GS's for free (_not_, mind you, that I am at all green with envy),  getting
another machine should not be too difficult.
