At the time Awks 5 became available for free download, efforts were being made
to obtain the rights to develop and release an even newer, bug-free version.
There would always have been buyers, even if it were only a few hundred. Even
if a full version update wasn't done, a free, bug-fix update could have.

Since when is Scantron's sales rep in charge of releasing their products for
download?

I agree a price reduction would have been good; in fact there already were
severe price reductions if you owned AppleWorks 4, and you knew the right words
to say.

I already said why. At the time it was first uploaded, it still produced an
income for the programmers, as did some of the TimeOuts, which were uploaded
at the same time. And, it's a lousy upload. Whoever put that cluster of files
and instructions together didn't know what he was doing.

To be honest, I haven't seen much evidence that the downloads are being used.
The obvious questions aren't being asked, etc.

I agree that the debate is boring and I'm surprised to see it still going on.
At least we have other boards that we can use to discuss Apple II's.
