We're likely talking about 3 different memory cards then.
For the IIe only there's the Extended 80 Column card which is an Auxiliary slot
memory/80 column card. While there were exceptions, these were usually 64k
cards that also included the circuitry to allow your computer to display 80
column text. Very few programs aside from AppleWorks will use more than 64k in
the Auxiliary slot and to use it as a RAMdisk you need to run special software
The IIgs memory expansion card made by Apple was strictly a memory expansion
card as the 80 column function is built into all IIgs. It was made for the
memory expansion slot found only on the IIgs. All of it was addressable by the
processor and part could be partitioned off as a RAMdisk from the Control
Panel.
A third card is the Apple II memory expansion card. This card can hold from 256
to 1mb of RAM. It fits in the regular slots and is generally used as a RAMdisk,
however AppleWorks can be patched to use it and AW4 and possibly 5 can use it
instead of the RAM in the memory expansion slot. This card can be used in any
Apple II with slots and will automatically show up under ProDOS as a RAMdisk. .
