Quick question

I just recently rescued an Apple ][e that was destined for the trash.
It works great (even has an 80-column card), but one thing's puzzling
me.  There's a little light between the ` and open apple keys labelled
"Enhanced," and it's lit as long as the machine is on.  The ][e was my
first exposure to computers, and I spent countless hours using them,
but I don't remember ever seeing this light!  Can anyone tell me what
it's for?
