Seems like the connectors to HD1 and HD2 got swapped:  it's HD1 which
should be used during the boot.

Nah -- instead it transfers control form the ROM on the drive controller
card to the motherboard ROM.

Why not try to replace it with a TV set?  If you have an RF modulator,
connect the output from it to the antenna input of your TV.  Or try
to connect the video output from your Apple to the video input on
your TV, if it has one (e.g. in the form of a SCART connector).
