apple disks in linux with fdutils
I got an Apple IIGS at a second hand store the other day for $3.93
(amusing price no?) and a friend gave me a 3.5" apple drive to use with
it. We've downloaded the disk images for the OS. Now we need to get
them on a set of disks.
I found some similar posts about reading and writing apple disks in
other machines/ platforms, but I couldn't find what I was looking for.
fdutils on linux can make a disk that has any number of tracks and
sectors physically possible for the drive/ interleaved or non
interleaved. Its really a nice package.
you can format a regular HD floppy with your standard NEC 3.5 floppy
drive for up to 1960k.
So my question is:
1) What are the specifications for the floppy disk format used with the
apple IIGS on these old 3.5" drives
2) are there any real physical differences in the way these disk drives
deal with disks compared to drives you would find elsewhere, and where
can I read about these differences
3) Does anyone know where I can find these kinds of standards
generally? I tried IEEE, but couldn't find anything.
Thanks much,
Justin
