..and neither is Free-BSD.... however Unix was mentioned.

Yeah I know -- I fought a lot with that on my old '486 some years
ago: installing the commandline parts of UNIX worked fine, however
whenever I tried to get X up and running, very weird things happened
to my graphics adapter.  It appeared that Linux simply was unable to
recognize the chipset, even if I attempted VGA mode.  Eventually I
gave up getting X to work.
