Probably not. The main effect of a dead BatRAM battery is that, from
power-up, you start with the default settings in the Control Panel. (Any
settings you make after turning ON the computer will be lost once the computer
is turned OFF.)
Note: "Default settings" means that if you go to the Control Panel (press
OpenApple-Control-Escape and select "Control Panel") and view various settings,
you will notice that they are all at the checkmarked position.

You can boot your System disk and do a CAT of your main directory. If the
file PRODOS shows up as a lot bigger than 3k-- like it's 18k or so-- then
Supertimer's explanation fits. Somehow, the small setup-redirect file (named
"ProDOS") which should be there on a GS System disk has been replaced by the
standard for-real PRODOS file. (On a GS System disk, for-real PRODOS is named
"P8" and is located in the System/ folder.)
If the above situation fits, you may be able to restore your GS System
boot disk if one of your other disks still has the small (3k or so) "ProDOS"
file. Using Copy II Plus or a similar copier, you could replace the big PRODOS
file with the little one GS System wants.
Whatever the glitch may turn out to be, in case you need to download
another copy of one or more System 6.0.1 disks, you can find the disks in the
IIgsSystem601disks/ folder of GSWV April 2000 at ...
http://www.grin.net/~cturley/gsezine/GS.WorldView/v2000/Apr/Archives/
These are plain ShrinkIt .sdk files which you can unshrink to 800k disks using
8-bit ShrinkIt or GS-ShrinkIt.
You can find the same .sdk files in a single .zip (System601.zip) on
Asimov at ftp://ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/incoming/ .
