Not true, the PLDs are socketed, and my PALs have been replaced
with GALs thanks to Henry and his entourage. PALs requires very
specific hardware and software to read them, where there is still
quite good hardware that can read a GAL. My GALEP-4 reads most of
them very easily.

Absolutely, true. The EPROM is the firmware/software code that
runs the card.
