     Probably, your best bet is to focus upon a connection between your IIgs
and the PC. If you have at least one 5.25" drive, you can set up a link to
transfer 5.25" disk images using ADTgs. This requires a NULL modem cable
connecting the the IIgs modem serial port to a PC serial port. (All of the
transfers mentioned here require such a cable.)

A NULL modem cable is just a IIgs or Mac high-speed modem cable + NULL modem
adaptor + whatever cable is needed to connect from the adaptot to the PC.

     To transfer ADT and get it going you need to be able to boot DOS 3.3. If
"no software" means no DOS 3.3 disk, you can download dos33dmp.zip from
Ground at

Unzip the file using WinZIP and follow the directions (or see the article
about Transferring 3.3 in the March 2000 issue of GS WorldView at ...

The diskette (on your IIgs) for getting DOS 3.3 must be a double-density
5.25" diskette (often called a "360k" disk).  Regular high-density 5.25" PC
diskettes will not work.


     Once you have a bootable DOS 3.3 diskette, you can transfer ADTgs. It is

     So far (dos33.dmp and adtgs.dmp) you have been transferring dump files--
generally a pretty slow process; but, it has the advantage of not requiring
the IIgs to have a telecom program. ADTgs is a telecom program dedicated to
transferring 5.25" .dsk disk image files which communicates with adt.exe
(included in the .zip file) running on the PC. Normal ADTgs speed is 9600
baud.

     Once you can transfer disk images, you can get lots of good utility
software-- each 5.25" disk image ends up as a 5.25" diskette on your IIgs.
You can also get a good Apple II telecom utility and have a way to transfer
all kinds of files. (For more about disk images, see the File Utilities FAQs

     ProDOS is something else you will get on disk images, along with a
version of Copy II Plus which can format 3.5" diskettes. (These should be
double-density diskettes. High-density 1.44MB PC diskettes _may_ work; but,
they are not generally reliable when used in IIgs 3.5" drives.)

     You will get ShrinkIt, too. This will let you unshrink whole-disk
ShrinkIt archives (.sdk files) of 800k 3.5" diskettes which have some version
of GS System.

     To boot a condensed System 5.0.4 or System 6.0.1 you should have at
least 1MB plugged into the Expansion Memory Slot.


     An alternative to the above is to contact some regular Csa2 poster and
offer to pay mailing and materials costs to have disks sent to you. Of
course, you will eventually want to set up a way to transfer files from your
net computer to your IIgs; but, starting will be easier if you do not need to
begin from scratch.
