I agree with your assessment. In the late 80's and early 90's Apple was
going strong with two platforms. Were they to have kept up the Apple//
series they would not have alienated over half their customer base. I
suspect they would still be giving Micro$oft a run for their money. They
would have found simpler is better (and faster). Their reputation of
honesty and quality would have put more Macs and Apples in the office.
Of course they would have had to drop the price of the Macs a little.
Still, considering the profit margins on those machines there would be
no problem.
Now if they were to have actually *pushed* the Apple// we would now be
talking about 128 or 256 bit machines.
