It's a Y2K problem. I am the author of  the Y2K fixes for all the various
versions of AppleWorks. If you would say which version of AppleWorks you have,
I can tell you how to fix it - or I will fix it for you. 

To tell which version you have, watch the copyright screen as it boots up. From
your description it sounds like it is either v1.x or 2.x (where x can be any
number from 1 to 4). We must know the exact version number to fix it. All the
versions of AppleWorks have Y2K problems, so even if you update to a later
version (which you should for a IIGS), you will still need a fix at some point.
