Two teeny points to add: 1) emulation 2) an aging baby boomer population
(least in the US)

1) my introduction back to vintage 8 bit computers began by experimenting
with TRS80 emulators, then Apple, then onto ebay to buy the real thing.
Without the emulators I probably wouldn't be here. Both TRS80 and Apple
emulators are currently being improved . For some, the emulated system is
better than the physical system - hard drives, faster speeds, printer
access, different hardware versions, etc.

2) there are probably more people like me since many who began their
computing experience are looking back with nostalgia. As I understand it
this group is almost cresting in numbers.
