The general purpose fix try for an Apple II with problems like those you
describe is cleaning and resocketing.

What you do is get together some household cleaner (Windex, Fantastik
are examples) plus paper towels, cotton swabs, and, maybe, some alcohol and
fine-grain sandpaper. White-out or nail polish are handy for marking IC's.
Have a pecil and paper ready to jot down notes about what's where.

Find a place which is reasonably free of static. Open the case and blow
out, wipe out dust. Then, mark one end of each IC in a socket and the socket.
Mark plugged in cable connectors, too.

Now, one-by-one, scooch up and firmly resocket each IC. (A small thin
screwdriver or large needle makes a good tool for prying up a socketed IC.)
If an IC's pins are black with gunk/corrosion, remove it and lightly
brush the pins with the fine sandpaper. Re-socket the IC using the marks on
the IC and its socket to make sure it is correctly oriented.

Unplug, clean, and reconnect each cable plug.

When done and the case is cleaned, put the computer back together and
try it out. If everything now seems to work except that diskettes do not
boot, you may need to clean the drive head. For more about this, see
