I have a clone drive that has this exact problem. I bought it
years ago for a really good price. It worked flawlessly for a few
years then suddenly it developed this 'feature'. As long as you
know about it, it's not too limiting since it works really well
for read only disks. As I do a lot of programming (tinkering
mostly) I use this drive to keep a set of utilities online.

Well, I was going to give the make/model but the drive has no
labels on it anywhere. The only distinguishing features, it's a
half height drive with a small maple leaf logo on the front side,
lower left corner.

At one time, I had opened it up to check things out but there was
no visible damage and I don't have the means to actually check the
circuitry or the knowledge to know what to look for. As I now have
replacements drives, this is no longer a problem.
