What kind of card is this?

I got an old apple ii+ from an auction. It was used to drive some
hospital analyzer equipment years ago. Anyways it has this card in it.

It  says Mountain Computer Incorporated Copyright 1981
on the bottom it says multifunction. It appears to have a serial and
parallel cable coming out of it. It also has a cable connected to a
battery holder with 2 AA batteries. Also has another cable that goes
to the apple ii+ motherboard and fits between a chip socket and the
chp that sits in it. Any ideas what this is?
