I think he means shell account, i.e. non-graphical unix command line
interface. I don't know about Earthlink, but around here some of the smaller
ISP's offer shell access as well as PPP.  With shell access, all you need is
a comm program to access the net. Many ISP's don't want to deal with it,
though it's how the internet started out.
