DOS 3.3 dump for new users

Well, you might be able to transfer the dump, but it needs to be
able to init itself and it's zero page and.........
It would also be possible to do the same with ProDOS, once you
modified it enough so it didn't try to load another system
program.
Now that I think about it, a transferable DOS 3.3 or compatible
might come in real handy.

Yes; it would be a way around the problem of getting an Apple II with
zero software. You could transfer DOS 3.3 and, then, transfer ADT. Of course,
once you have ADT going, you can transfer anything available on 5.25" .dsk
disk image files.
It turns out that making a DOS 3.3 dump which can be transferred is
fairly easy. Mainly, you boot DOS 3.3 (actually a Prontodos or EsDOS disk to
get a fast DOS 3.3) and BSAVE the stuff from $9D00-$BFFF. Then, you write a
program to transform the DOS binary code into Text you would type in from the
monitor and save this to a TEXT file.
As you mention, it's a good idea to add some setup stuff-- code in the
$3D0-$3FF area. And, to simplify the transfer, you start the Text with a
"CALL-151" and finish with a "9D84G" to let DOS do a cold start and arrange
things like Zero Page vectors after it's transferred. This leaves you with a
workable DOS 3.3 which can INIT a blank diskette. Booting the newly INITed
disk gets you DOS 3.3 in its usual 'bullet proof' form.
So, as Aron suggested, the process of getting DOS 3.3 to an Apple II
with no telecom program is very much like the one used for transferring ADT.
You can use a telecom program on the net computer-- like HyperTerm on a PC--
and the IN# command on an Apple II with a serial card or built-in serial
port.
The dump file (dos33.dmp) and directions are available in a .zip file
(dos33dmp.zip) in the March preview issue of GS WorldView at ...
http://www.grin.net/~cturley/gsezine/GS.WorldView/v2000/Mar/MiscNew/ .
The directions (dos33dmpinfo.txt) are also available separately in the same
folder.
