You bet.  I imagine the same is true of magnetic strips on the backs of
credit cards - but I'm not willing to test that!
True.  I've always been amazed at the prevalence of strong magnetic catches
on women's purses.  They must accidentally demagnetize thousands of credit
cards per year.

The radio shack bulk tape eraser makes a great degausser. It is about the
same weight and size as an iron, and it works brilliantly. A real necessity
when dealing with old CRTs, really.Cat number 44-232 or 44-202 are
essentially the same thing.

A lot of color tv sets, and likely monitors, have a built in degaussing
coil. They are physically placed around the front of the CRT, and connected
to the AC line via a thermistor or something. So when the set is turned on
the first time, it is automatically degaused. Yet it doesnt' come into play
if you turn off the tv set and then rapidly back on.
Yes, early tv sets didn't have degaussers, but it's been at least thirty
years, surely longer, that they've been standard.

True--in fact monitors with degaussers make a characteristic "buzzy" thunk
when they are switched on cold. 

But built-in degaussers are seldom strong enough to demagnetize areas that
have been strongly magnetized.
