He did it for the money.  Gates knew that Apple was in trouble.
He knew that with help, it'll rise again.  So he invested in Apple.
Now Apple is back again and worth more.

Simple motivation.  There is no need to infuse any evil goal
to the relationship although I am sure Microsoft has taken
advantage of Apple through the relationship in the past.
