I guess I would fit primarily as a hobbyist. I am really all over the place
when it comes to my computers, especially the Apple lle I own. One minute,
I'll be playing with the hardware, the next, I'll be loading up a game, or
writing a program in BASIC. My Apple lle was actually a gift. It was given
to me just a couple of months ago.
Currently, the monochrome display has an issue with the power supply though.
When we powered it up, the display worked for a few seconds and blew a fuse.
I replaced the fuse with an inline fuse holder, but that didn't work. It
blew the new fuse immediately. I think the transformer is shorted out. So
right now I am looking for a replacement display. I am hoping to get an
original color display, but if I can find a monochrome display locally, I'll
go for that. (Anyone living in the Las Vegas area who ???) The Apple does
not have much in the way of upgrades installed. It does have a Duo-Disk and
the ability to use a color display. But, it also has only 128Kb of memory.
That is going to be changing quite soon though. I have a deal where I am
getting 2 more of these old Apple's. One is a lle and the other a llc. The
owner only wants $50.00 for the 2 computers and all of the upgrades he has.
I will be able to upgrade my lle to 1 Meg of RAM, a six pack expansion card,
mouse and associated controller, printer port, 2 serial ports, and network
adapter.
A month or so ago too, I also picked up a great deal on a complete IBM 5150
system (IBM's first PC) with all of the original boxes, packing materials,
manuals (All 5 manuals that came with the system, never opened) and even the
original software on floppy diskettes that still work. This computer has
dual internal full height 5 1/4" floppy disks, 640 Kb RAM, original IBM PC
keyboard, and color display and controller. Inside, there are the memory,
network card, cassette port, printer port, 2 serial connections and even a
sound card and joystick controller. The original owner paid over $18,000.00
for the system when it was new and I bought it all for only $200.00! I am
currently waiting for my wife to pick it up from her brother in California
when she goes down there in June. I had him pick it up and keep it there to
avoid possible shipping damage and to save the cost of sending it to LAs
Vegas. Besides, it gives the wife a reason to visit her brother. I just
wish I didn't have to wait so long to get it here. We even have a place in
my den to set it all up.
Once I get the other Apple systems and find out what everything is, I will
probably sell everything I am not going to be using. That includes a Duo
Disk unit, video controller cards, memory cards, and possibly a network
adapter and mouse controller and serial mouse. However, I won’t be trying
to make a fortune. In fact, I'm not getting these to make money. All I
will want is for someone to take the rest and pay for the shipping, if my
best friend doesn't want them that is. However, I still need a display for
my lle.
Eventually, I'll have the Apple lle and the IBM systems sitting side-by side
in a sort of small museum setting. We are building a new desk for my
primary PC and are going to add an extension for the vintage systems, plus
an extra station for those times when I get a computer from one of my
clients that needs repair or maintenance. I'll be in geek nirvana!!!
If anyone has a display in the Las Vegas area, or are going to be visiting
and have one to sell (cheap please) or if you are interested in obtaining
the rest of the Apple equipment after I use what I can to upgrade mine,
please contact me directly.
