I agreed with your post up to here.  It is nice to hear that someone
actually pays attention to the legal status of a software title rather
than just assuming it is free for the taking.

However, this is where I disagree.  GEOS is and always has been a
commercial program.  It is not shareware so unfortunately, you aren't
legally allowed to download a copy and try it out for a while.  You
either buy it, find a demo version to try or find someone who owns it
and check it out on their system.
