You beat me to it.  :-)

To allow an AppleShare (or File Sharing) server to work with a ProDOS-8
client, you must ensure that the name of the hard drive (or the top
level shared folder) complies with ProDOS naming restrictions: starts
with a letter, contains only letters, digits and the period (dot), and
no more than 15 characters.

The same applies to any folder and file names which are to be accessed
from an Apple II in ProDOS-8.

There are no naming restrictions if the client is running GS/OS, but you
won't be able to switch into ProDOS-8 and retain access to
inappropriately named parts of the server volume.

Note that the network name of the server itself has no such limitations.
