First scenario, the Mac that was a II:
If in 1984 Apple made the Mac with built in transparent Apple II
capability, I would be a Mac user today.
Second scenario, the Power IIGS:
If in 1989 or 1990 instead of the ROM 3, Apple came out with
a significantly enhanced IIGS (better graphics, at least 7Mhz
CPU, 4MB built in and a hard drive), I would have been very
happy and would have stuck with Apple rather than turning to
the PC world.
However, today it is too late for either scenario. Making a
new Super GS today would be too late because the pool of
interested users is too small. It is too late for such a computer
to do much to help Apple. UNLESS that computer was
marketed as the Commodore 64 of 2000. Imagine a palmtop
Apple IIGS with AppleWorks GS built in running at 20Mhz
and containing Spectrum/SIS with a special ISP you could
connect to wirelessly anywhere via cellular service! All for
$100 to $200. Or even a $99 laptop with such capability.
There is a market for such an appliance computer.
Back to the Super GS scenario, though, if Apple came out
with a new IIGS desktop, it may be too late for it to be
popular, but I'd get one. ;-)
I'm too big a IIGS fan as I'm sure a few others here are.
