If you've ever compared surface mount TTL chips to their DIP counterparts you'll
see that they too are usually smaller than the DIP size... i.e. if you've looking
in the top of an EPROM you can see the whole chip in the window, and then it has
wires that radiate way out (relatively) to the pins that plug into the board.
