Sorry, can't help on the schematic, but I might be able to help
on other info.

The 65816 used in the GS is not pin compatible with the 6502 or
65c02 or 65802 (a 65c02 replacement/enhancement).

There were a few methods used to speed up the old Apple II's.
One way was to use a card mounted in a slot and connected into
the cpu connector, This basically replaced the cpu/ram in the
system. This was an older method and I only had a limited 
amount of exposure to it. The one I recall was for a II+ and
only worked with the lower 48k (I think). There is also the
transwarp/transwarp GS method which is similar but offers a
cache and uses the system memory.

The other method I know of is the Zip chip. There was a lot of
effort in designing the Zip and I remember reading about some
of the difficulties. For instance, controlling speed to various
slots. I never got the chance to try the Zip, but from the info
I read, it was an interesting design.
