The difference isn't in the physical pinout or the electrical signals
that are available on each pin. The difference is how the software
uses each pin. For example, I don't think the Mac ever has the DCD
(Data Carrier Detect) line from a modem connected to its serial ports
but the IIgs does using the GPI (General Purpose Input) line I
believe.
