If you can run data CD-ROMs, then the hardware works and the
interface to the hardware works.  If audio CDs do not work, they
should not crash the system.  That the system crashes sounds
like something is wrong with the media controller or its
associated files.  Try installing a fresh copy to see if this is fixed.
